CLINICAL
GAIT MEASUREMENT
with PEDOGRAPHS by Marjorie A. Adams, MS, PT
The manual takes the clinician through all the necessary steps
from assembling the materials to reporting the data. The making
of the pedograph is described in ten steps, with pictures,
for ease of use.
Directions for measurement were developed and have been used
consistently for many years. For those who want to analyze
the data generated, examples are given of use with a computer
spreadsheet.
Since gait is related to age and height Growth Charts from
the National Center for Health Statistics for Girls and Boys
are included.

This manual provides the much needed information
for clinicians who are anxious to clinically measure changes
to gait in children even in the absence of sophisticated
and elaborate gait analysis systems. Clinical examinations
using only a few basic tools can provide a wealth of information
and obtain much of the same data as generated by a gait lab
for significantly less cost.
Preface
This manual is the outcome of over twenty
years of experience, reading articles on the making and use
of pedographs, and the trial and error of actually carrying
out the directions. Many therapists, children, and their
families were patient with us while we learned about ink
consistency, the need for feet to be washed and dried before
proceeding, and the height of the children to be measured.
We were always looking for a way to evaluate our interventions
and this method uses inexpensive materials, can be carried
out in the clinic, and gives useful information to children,
their parents, and therapists. The only problem is what to
do with the 10 meter lengths of paper with the measured footprints
when the process is finished.
Introduction
to the Use of Pedographs
What Is A Pedograph?
"The walkway-marking method of gait
analysis is known as a pedograph. It is a simple measurement
of the time and distance parameters of gait as shown by a series
of inked footprints on a length of paper. Spatial and temporal
data are obtained using pedographs. After footprints are imprinted
on a length of paper, they are measured and analyzed. The pedograph
can be used to evaluate Stride and Step Length, Foot Angle,
Base of Support, Cadence and Velocity. The system is suitable
for use in the clinic and is noninvasive and inexpensive." (Adams,
2000)
